Students create custom candles by designing patterns, making silicone molds, and casting wax. They explore solidification, shrinkage, and density, with an optional business module for calculating costs and setting prices.
In this engaging STEAM project, students dive into the full production process of custom-made candles using ProjoTech’s specialized kit (3DGlow). They begin by designing a candle pattern using CAD software at a 1:1 scale, followed by 3D printing the model. This printed pattern becomes the core template for creating a flexible silicone rubber mold. With their mold ready, students then pour in melted wax to cast their unique candle. During this process, they observe the physical changes that occur, particularly wax shrinkage and solidification, and conduct experiments to calculate the material’s density and shrinkage rate. The project integrates design thinking, material science, and precision measurement. As an optional extension into entrepreneurship, students can calculate the production costs of their candle, set a selling price, and draft a simple business plan. This adds real-world relevance by introducing basic financial literacy and marketing concepts, making the project a well-rounded experience that combines creativity, technical skills, and economic understanding
