Students design and build a solar-powered grill that uses concentrated sunlight for cooking. The project focuses on maximizing heat production while ensuring the grill is efficient, eco-friendly, safe, and practical for remote use.

In this exciting sustainability and engineering challenge, students design and construct a solar grill—a clean, efficient, and portable alternative to traditional grilling, especially for remote or off-grid settings. Using ProjoTech’s special kit (EcoGrill), students explore how to harness and concentrate solar energy to generate the high temperatures needed for cooking. They investigate the science behind solar reflectors, heat concentration, and material selection to maximize thermal output. The grill must meet key design criteria: it should be easy to assemble, handle, clean, and safe for outdoor use. Throughout the project, students apply theoretical concepts in solar energy, heat transfer, optics, and environmental science while developing practical design and prototyping skills. The outcome is a fully functional solar-powered grill that merges renewable energy innovation with real-world usability, making this a powerful learning experience that encourages students to think critically, act sustainably, and build for purpose.
