Tape & Shape

Students design and build functional furniture using only cardboard, tape, and glue. The challenge focuses on strength, stability, and creativity, producing a piece that can support a person’s weight while being visually appealing.

In this hands-on design challenge, students combine engineering principles with artistic creativity to build furniture using only cardboard, tape, and glue. Their mission: construct a piece, such as a chair, stool, or bench, that is not only functional and stable, but also able to support a person’s weight without collapsing. Students explore structural strength, load distribution, and material behavior under stress through careful planning and prototyping. At the same time, they’re encouraged to unleash their creativity to ensure the final design is sturdy, innovative, and aesthetically pleasing. This project offers a rich opportunity to investigate concepts like tension, compression, joints, and geometric reinforcement, all while applying sustainable design thinking. By the end, students will have built a fully functional piece of furniture using simple, recyclable materials, proving that big ideas don’t always need complex tools.
