FlowLab

Students design, build, and test a scaled wind tunnel using 3D-printed parts and foamboards. They explore air resistance and aerodynamics by comparing airflow around simple and custom 3D models.

In this advanced STEAM project, students step into the world of aerodynamics and experimental design by building a functional, scaled wind tunnel system. Working in teams, they begin by studying key concepts such as wind tunnel applications, air resistance, airflow patterns, and aerodynamic principles, as well as the role of 3D printing and electric fans in modern testing environments.

Using ProjoTech’s special kit (StreamX), students design and fabricate the wind tunnel structure. They 3D print critical components like the fan bracket, model mounts and fold foamboards to construct tunnel ducts. The tunnel features a testing chamber with transparent sides, allowing students to clearly observe how airflow interacts with test objects.

The testing phase begins with placing basic 3D shapes—such as cubes, spheres, and cones—into the tunnel, using colored smoke or sublimation vapor to visualize air movement. Then, students design freeform aerodynamic models and compare how their shapes perform. They record a video experiment highlighting the differences in air resistance and flow patterns, showcasing their learning in a real-world application of aerospace and design thinking.

This project combines mechanical design, fluid dynamics, prototyping, and media production, giving students a rich, interdisciplinary learning experience rooted in engineering innovation.
