Students grow medicinal plants in a hydroponic system they design, then extract and formulate an organic cough remedy—learning about plant science, sustainable agriculture, and natural pharmaceuticals.

In this interdisciplinary project, students become herbal scientists and agricultural engineers by developing a natural cough medicine, starting from seed to solution. Their first task is to research and select a plant with proven cough-relieving properties, such as thyme, basil, or licorice. Then, students design and build a custom hydroponic system optimized for the plant’s growth, carefully selecting parameters like water flow, pH levels, and nutrient balance. Once the plant is thriving, they harvest it and follow a documented process to extract the active compounds and formulate the cough remedy. Throughout the project, students learn key concepts in biology, chemistry, health science, and sustainable food-tech. The experience connects the dots between agriculture, pharmacology, and green innovation, empowering students to see how nature and science can work hand-in-hand to create real-world health solutions. The final outcome? A student-grown, student-made herbal medicine from a fully sustainable, soil-free system.
