STEAM Shelter

Students work together to build a dome structure using straws, learning about shapes, strength, and teamwork while exploring engineering and shelter design basics.

In this fun and creative project, students become mini engineers by designing and constructing a dome-shaped structure using only straws and connectors. They’ll be introduced to basic geometric shapes, learning how triangles and polygons can be combined to create a strong and stable structure. The project emphasizes teamwork, as students work in groups to build sections of the dome and then assemble them together.

As they build, students explore how domes are used in real life—from igloos and sports arenas to the ancient Dome of the Rock—and why this shape is so strong and efficient.

At the end, students present and celebrate their final dome structures. This project blends STEM, creativity, and collaboration, sparking curiosity in architecture, engineering, and the power of working together.
